Walter Frank and I were driving around the east end of Whitby we saw the following great birds. Great blue heron flying, 2 mockingbirds, pair of kestrels, red tail hawks, harriers, and Wild Turkies. I have some bad memories of turkey and after looking at the photos I remember why.
What a amazing coloured bird the varied thrush is. He was in full sunlight in the tree for a good 20 min. I was not able to take any great shots. This was a lifer for me. Frank and I started the day at Ravenshoe and saw 3 snowies, snow buntings, red tail and northern shrike. Just down the road were 2 coyotes in the field. Followed directions on the Ont Bird site and saw another snowie on Bathhurst. Final stop was the varied thrush.
As I drove north by the time I hit Gravenhurst there were Ravens everywhere. In North Bay I saw them at Tim Hortens, grocery stores, malls. In Algonquin Park I think they were even larger. a couple of shots.
A quick look at this beautiful grey screech owl. the last photo is the owl with the mouth open. It is truly a bad shot but the size of mouth is amazing.
A couple of pictures from when i was in North Bay. Temperature the first night was -27 and I was worried my car wouldn't start. Went down to watch the wind over the fishing huts - could hardly see them, and lastly a few birds from Algonquin. Top to Bottom - goldfinch, red breasted nuthatch, chick-a-dee, 3 goldfinch male and female, white breasted nuthatch, hairy woodpecker, snow bunting.
