Hummingbird Clearwing (moth)

I was taking photos of the hummingbirds in my backyard. They are arriving in good numbers now. At one time there were 3 fighting over one feeder - 2 females and one male. I noticed in the flowers this unusual bug - so wandered over to see what it was. Thanks to Justin Peters it was identified as a Hummingbird Clearwing (moth). I have never seen one before. You never know what you will see in your backyard. Today highlight was the moth, but I also had orioles, Carolina wren, cooper hawk, and more.

Short Tailed Weasel at Wye Marsh.

Wye Marsh Wetlands This is a very small weasel and it has a black tail. First time seeing a short tailed weasel. It was having a great time running around, jumping and playing in the field very early in the morning.

Spotted Sandpiper - young baby July 10, 2013

On my way to Markham hospital for some tests I was so lucky to see a pair of Spotted Sandpiper babies. They were very close to the edge of the water on the lily pads. They are tiny little things. I could hear the adult calling from the edge of the pond. Look really closely at the tail and feathers around the face. Sweet. I must get up more often and be out at the pond by 7:30am. A lucky spotting of a baby bird I have never seen before. Lots of adults but never young.
