Great Blue Heron on nest with 2 chicks - Florida 2015

When arriving at Lakeland we could hear the chicks but mom soon appeared and heads popped up.

The two in the nest were always fighting.  As you can see one is larger than other.

Mom watches at the two fight using their beaks

The one almost fell out of the nest

see the size difference

The adult is trying to throw up the food to feed chicks.  They were ready

Ready to feed

Glossy Ibis - Florida 2015

A very difficult photo to take as they are very dark but when you can get the light on them the colour is amazing.

Great Blue Herons on nest - Florida 2015

I never tire of these stunning great blue herons in breeding plumage.

Love the feathers

In the nest

In a few weeks there will be babies on this nest.

Crested Caracara and Cooper Hawk at sunset Florida 2015

Janet and I were out looking for owls when this beautiful cooper hawk landed on the wire  As you can see he has been banded.

Crested Caracara were my favourite bird last year.  This year he kept his distance and laughed at us. Every time we left he flew over the car and disappeared  Brat.

Has food in mouth.

Burrowing Owls Florida 2015

they are small cute and one amazing owl.
Although the weather was cold we still saw 9 owls.

Just at dusk and a pair came out.  The one owl on the right spit a pellet out on the sand.

A little roust

Very special pair of owls.  One has yellow eyes and one brown.

Another shot of the owls with two different colours of eyes.  My understanding is that the east coast burrowing owls have both yellow and brown eyes where the west coast are all yellow.

Yes I am very cute.

I was thrilled to see the process of expelling a pellet. How I would have loved to see what was in it.. Look closely and you can see pellet in his throat.

Here comes the pellet.

Black Vulture Captive in Florida 2015

We had an amazing day with The Avian Reconditioning Centre (ARC) with Carol and Scott McCorkle
ARC is a very special place that is licensed to help birds of prey rehabilitation and education centre in Apopka, Florida

Thanks to a friend Bella we made contact with ARC and set up a 2 hour photo shoot.  This is one of the ways they do their fundraising.  Plus the photographer get to see these special birds up close and person. Highly recommend this.

Meet Vincent Priceless an Immature Black Vulture.
Black Vultures do not hunt and kill prey they instead search for carrion which are animals already dead.
They  play an indispensable role in preventing the spread of disease

Meet Carol our very special host of the photo shoot.

She is bonded with this Black Vulture and able to rub his beak.
