Donna and I had a a great visit to see the CPF educational birds. We met Tracy, Big Frank and Rob up at the Kortright Centre for a great educational experience with the birds of prey. Tracy answered all our questions and allowed us to see the birds up close and personal. What a treat. Thank you.

A Smew is a small merganzer that lives in Europe and Asia. It is a very rare straggler to North America. But we saw it at Whitby Harbour. Lovely looking bird and was hanging around with the red breasted merganzers.

The male snowy owl was sitting on the top of the tree. I could see it from the top of the hill. I kept saying to myself Stay on the tree, don't fly lol.When I got to the tree I drove past and then turned around so I could shot a few shots from my car.He really was not interested in me. He was very interested in the crows trying to mob him. He would scream and scream at them.finally he had enough and flew into the fields.WOWthe best part was that the sun was just coming up. So you will see a golden glow on his chest.

Photo By Chris McConnell - Surrounded by friends and the fantastic staff and volunteers of Toronto Wildlife Centre a beautiful male red fox was released back into the wild. 2 months ago the fox was suffering from mange (see photos below). Thanks to Toronto Wildlife treatment was successful. How lucky we are to have staff like Andrew, volunteers like Chris and Janice to help take care of the wild animals in the area. Thanks to my buddies who supported us.

Janice and I did the west end waters looking for owls and ducks. It took a while but by the end we were thrilled by the ducks that we saw. Our final duck of the day was the Redheaded Duck. I have only seen them from a distance and well they are stunning.This was a great day as we did arrive home in our car not in the tow truck. Janice did provide some entertainment by trying to get into an old ladies car which was parked beside us. (which had me laughing like crazy).

On Monday last week Janice and I went to Humber Bay. I was totally amazed by the colour of the Gadwells even with no lighting. Today I went with Carol, Pat and Nancy to get a repeat of ducks.What a thrill watching the duck doing the mating ritual, chasing one another in the water and enjoying the sun.

At Oshawa Harbour we saw a Pacific Loon, Common Loons, Long Tail Ducks and many Red Breasted Merganzers.. Love the take off.

A day out with Lee with lots of great sighting. but my favourite was Lee running around the tree throwing the fall leaves in the air. She wanted it called I won 649 imagine the freedom. I won all of $5.00 lolWe went to many locations, Frenchman Bay, Oshawa Harbour, Rotary Park, Thickson Woods but the best bird sighting was at Tim Hortons drive through when a cooper hawk landed in the tree before us.

What a wonderful sight seeing a Red-Shouldered Hawk who had been injured and treated by the Toronto Wildlife Centre be release. The hawk was in a hurry to get south. He was gone so fast I didn't even see him leave the park. What a wonderful place the wildlife cetnre is. We are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lucky to have Rescue Staff like Andrew and Alex. The wonderful volunteers like Chris and Janice are totally dedicated to hellp injured wildlife in any way they can. Thank you so much. Here is the sequence of the releas.

I am amazed by what I see every day whether it is on the way to work, in my backyard or out with friends looking for something (we never know what). Chris and I were talking about that the other day. Each one of us seem to have good luck in finding certain animals or birds. Mine is the red-tail hawk and red fox, Chris is owls and coyotes, Janice is osprey and loon (plus the occasional bad luck lol) and Carol who enjoys everything from landscapes to birds of prey. If you look around you - you will be amazed by what you see.

Peregrine Falcon - juvenile We had three fly over the watch today. Fast and beautiful. Was able to get some of the letters on bands hopefully enough to find out who this is.

Beautiful young fox with the start of mange. His brother or sister has a severe case of mange on the face (ears and eyes) where this one has it on his legs and paws. Lovely face.

And what better way than to see a juvenile peregrine falcon fly overhead.On Saturday alone we saw 7, 500 hawk, eagles, ospreys, harrier fly by. You stand at the edge of the field and you see birds flying every which way. On top of that the woods surrounding the watch was filled with warblers, songbirds, and more.A terrific few days. We stayed at the Port Stanley Beach Hotel and I loved the fact that sitting in the room you could see TV's flying everywhere. Nice place with excellent food.

After work I stopped off at Rosetta McClain Gardens Hawk Watch. Saw a couple of bald eagles, turkey vultures, cooper hawk sharp shinned hawk, kestrels but it was this juvenile osprey that thrilled me. The osprey flew out of the top of the tree in front of us, eye level beside us and then for an added thrill circled above us in the beautiful blue sky. The last shot is the last I saw of it. Fly safe.

Going down to the beach to see how many egrets are roosting in the trees I saw one of the egrets walking along the shore and light was just hitting him beautifully. He would take a couple of steps then get a fish. I was there yesterday from 5;30 to 7pm. By 7 there were 4 egrets in the roost.

On our last day at Algonquin Park we went to Peck Lake. A beautiful juvenile Common Loon was coming around the shore. We thought how amazing. Unfortunately it wasn't. The poor loon had fishing line all around his lower beak and holding his tongue down. A fishing hook was on his back with fishing line tangled all over him, including his neck. We called the Visitor Centre and asked for help. A warden came with a canoe but were not successful at capturing the loon. We are hoping that they will continue to try and help this stunning juvenile loon. These photos are meant to show what fishing line can do.

iJanice and I decided to hit the Algonquin trails very early in the morning. We were meeting Barry and Margaret at 6:45 am On a back road we saw this beautiful fox cross the dirt road. Stopping the car hoping to see him again we were surprised to see him come back to check us out. Shooting at ISO 3200 I didn't expect one shot to work. I am very pleased with these shots. Enjoy

The first day at Algonquin Janice and I saw 3 moose. The first one was in a small marsh barely seen with all the trees. We enjoyed watching him. You can tell he is a older moose just by his size.

Janice and I went to Algonquin Park for 3 days. One of the most beautiful birds is the Gray Jay, also called Canada Jay, Whiskey Jacks.We saw 4 gray jays most day.

While at Algonquin Park we saw a beaver swimming in the marsh. He was quite upset with our being there and slapped his tail to let us know.Check out the feet in the one shot. Double click to enlarge photo.

Glossy Ibis - NEW bird and Fledged Cardinal Sept 12, 2011

Glossy Ibis was found at Cranberry Marsh with the Canada Geese and Great Blue Heron. Trilled to see this bird as it is a lifer for both of us.Thank goodness Peter knew what he was looking for because I didn't. Nice find.

After coming home Erle and I were sitting in the back yard when the whole cardinal family showed up with their newly fledged baby. So cute and still flapping it little wings and the feed me feed me call.

Eastern Screech Owl - freedom to fly again Sept 10 2011

Three male eastern screech owls being released after rehab. Thanks to the good people of Toronto Wildlife Centre and Owl Foundation, the great volunteers and people who find these injured owls and give them a second chance.

Checking the health of the owls prior to release, weight, wings, talons, fat (on chest), banding the bird.

Is it my imagination or does Chris look happy to be helping with the owls.

Home at last. Wow it was an amazing day.

What a wonderful day at the hawk watch. Hundreds of hawks, eagles, osprey, falcons, and harriers flew over. Lots of people out ready to see the amazing day.Sharpies were seen hundreds of them

Red Tail, Northern Harrier and Osprey

Merlin, Nighthawks and Loons were also migrating

Bald Eagles (one had a fish in his talons) all juveniles - last count was 5 when I left.
